Our budgeting story starts some where between being trapped in a debt sand pit and being completely feed up with the way we were handling money. My husband and I have been married for 15 years from the very start we made the wrong choices with money. We were sick and tired of being sick and tired, as Dave Ramsey would say.
We had paid off debt with the sale of our house but when we bought our new house the debt “magically” appeared again. Of course it wasn’t magic, it was bad money discussions. We were living beyond our means and we had no idea what we were doing with our money.
Over the years we tried a budget (yellowpad with a list of expenses and income). It didn’t work so I gave up and let my money manage me. It was fall of 2005 that my sister introduced me to Dave Ramsey. She mentioned that she was reading his book and trying to live by his advice. My sister didn’t have to convince me to buy the book. I was eager to find something that would help us stop this vicious cycle.
I think it was a few days later that I bought his book Total Money Makeover. I read through it very quickly because I was exciting about the possibility of getting control of our money and tell it what to do. My husband wasn’t as excited as I was but I ended up convincing him that this is what we needed to do.
Our arranged for our church to host a Financial Peace University class. I learned so much in that 13 weeks. My husband was right on board with and we are now are a year into our journey towards financial freedom. We have been on a budget for over a year and it’s been the best decision we have made with our money since we have been married.
If our story sounds painfully familiar I encourage you to check out Dave Ramsey’s website and see how he can help you gain financial freedom. Much of his information is free, including a workable zero based budget. You can also listen to the archives of his radio broadcast online for free.
In case you are wondering, I don’t get paid by Dave Ramsey or anyone to write what I do about him and his financial advice. I just truly believe in his teaching and know that if anyone really want to get control of their money and gain financial freedom they can with the right counseling. My husband and I have completely changed the way we handle our money and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We know we will reach our goals with knowlegde and determination.
