Trying to Stay Focused
We have not borrowed any money for over a year now and I have to tell you it’s not always easy. Especially when everyone around us seems to be borrowing money. I have friends and family that borrow for non-essentials as well as the essentials. At this point I have over the so called “need” to purchase non-essentials with borrowed money but I have to tell you it is hard when I really do need something.
Today one of our cars broke down and we really did have to get it fixed. It’s my husbands commuter car and he lives an hour from his work. I have to drive my kids to school and where we live there are not any neighbors that are able to help. So we really did need to fix the car now. But we didn’t borrow any money. We are paying for the repair with money we have. This however puts us in a place of trusting that God will provide the money we need to pay our mortgage.
Things have been very tight since we decided to never borrow money again. We had an emergency fund a few times but we ended up having to use the money for an emergency. Right now we don’t have an emergency fund and are having to really trust that God with provide for our needs. I do believe God will provide for our needs.
Please understand that we are not people that just say we don’t have the money but really do. We don’t go out to eat fast food every night, buy movies or high prices clothing, or other non-essentials. We are really living the “living like no one else” that Dave Ramsey speaks of. We are penny pincher’s.
I am sharing this with you not so that you can feel sorry for us but instead to learn from us. If you are not in this place of financial bondage then do everything in your power to keep from being in this place. If you are in the same boat as our family then I hope you are comforted in knowing you are not alone. Don’t get off course. Stay focused! Remember this is process that will take time. Of course as I am “preaching” to you I am also looking in the mirror.

From a fellow non-borrowing penny pincher, stay encouranged. We’ve been in your mode for more than four years. Among other things, we have the two best vehicles in the world – “paid for!” – that is.
We’ve been in that boat where we would have used the emergency fund if there was one. The savings get used most times but we are in the habit of puttting aside so that one day the savings will start to accumulate as an actual growing “emergency” fund.
But God is opening doors in mine and my wife’s live’s and we are living like no one else so that one day – especially when we pay off her school loan – we actually can live like no one else.
Thanks for the post. It made me feel better.
I am glad it made you feel better
. I am sure there are a lot more people out there like us. Even though this “living like no one else” can be difficult it so much better to have a plan and a direction than to be stuck in a rut.
[...] If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! As I have said many times before the journey toward gaining financial freedom is not easy. At times you want to just give up and buy the big screen tv on a Best Buy card that offers no payments for a year. Don’t tell me you have thought of it at least once since you have started your journey. I know I have thought of it but haven’t yet come close to actually doing it. It can be very difficult for those of us that are taking a stand for our own future and finally telling our money what to do. We see our friends, family and neighbors buying the bigger and the better or the latest and the greatest ’stuff’ on the market. It’s just stuff though. It’s not really what will make you happy. [...]
