It is my firm belief that we are not here on earth just to serve ourselves. I believe everyone should be doing their part to help the world. Sometimes when we get wrapped up in our own troubles we forget about the trouble of others.
Giving with our whole heart is one of the most rewarding decisions we can make. When we give without expecting anything in return we have truly taken the focus off of ourselves. If you are in a situation of financial hardship and can’t find relief in the midst of your stress, why not take the focus off of yourself and give.
For some people this may seem like an impossible task. Especially those that work, come home, sleep, and go back to work. Where can you find the time to help others when there is not enough time to help yourself? Where can you find money to give when you can’t pay your bills? Giving back does not have to mean give more than you can. Give what you have whether it be 10 minutes a day or 10 hours a day, $1 a month or $100 a month.
I believe that sacraficial giving is the key. Sacraficial giving has no dollar amount or time frame. Each person should know what amount is a sacrifice for them.
Some ideas of giving back:
Giving a 10th of your income to your church or volunteer services.
Give money or time to a local homeless shelter or other community service.
Sponsor a child in need. World Vision is a great organization.
Help a neighbor in need. Example: A single or widowed mother could possibly use help car repair, lawn mowing, childcare. You can get the whole family involved in services to your neighbors.
These are just a few ways that you can give of yourself and take the focus off of your own troubles. I have included a number of quotes about giving below.
- “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
- Acts, 20:35
- “Life, like a mirror, never gives back more than we put into it.”
- Anonymous
- “The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.”
- Bejar, Hada
- “As I give, I get.”
- Bethune, Mary McLeod African-American educator (1875-1955)
- “Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life’s blood. But everyone has something to give.”
- Bush, Barbara
- “Happiest are the people who give most happiness to others.”
- Diderot, Dennis Philosopher (1713-1784)

Great post.
I found a microfinance site called Kiva.org. Microfinance is basically loaning money to poor people or people without access to banks. You loan them money interest free, and when they pay it back, you can turn around and help someone else.
The money goes much further and I’ve always preferred helping people who want to help themselves.
