Do you want a debt free Christmas?

I read an article to day from the Dave Ramsey Newsletter that subscribed to that really inspired me to strive for a debt free Christmas. I thought I would share it with Time To Budget readers.

You want to give the best gifts this Christmas, don’t you? Of course!

But searching for the best gift for a loved one can be tricky and stressful year after year. Many people think they have to give a better gift this year than they gave last year. They put unnecessary stress on themselves to wade through the massive crowds just to spend lots of money on the “it” gift of the season. (That’s making you tired just thinking about it, isn’t it?)

It doesn’t have to be this way.

We’re convinced that one of the best gifts to give yourself, your family, your kids, your loved ones, and your community is the commitment to be debt free.

What gift will they remember 5 and 10 years from now: the Barbie under the tree or the fact that there’s money in the bank to go to college? The restaurant gift card or the extra time you spent with them because you no longer had to work overtime so much? Please don’t misunderstand – gifts are great! They’re fun! But gifts are more meaningful and fun to give when they’re not bought on credit.

Shannon in Charlotte, NC can relate. She recently called Dave on the show to share her family’s excitement of becoming debt free. In just under two years, this family of 5 paid off $70,000 – you can bet they’ll be having a fantastic, peaceful Christmas without worrying about their money! Her husband even sold his dream car and got a second job to bust out of this debt sooner than they originally planned. He and Shannon made the decision to sacrifice for a short time in order to leave a worthwhile legacy for their 3 young kids – what a fabulous, lasting gift! (That’s making you happy just thinking about it, isn’t it?)

    Hi Mona,

Indeed one if the greatest gifts to our family is that we remain debt-free. It is true that gifts are more meaningful when they aren’t bought with credit. i find a lot of people going for credit cards as they are on a shopping spree and then after the celebrations are over, they are afraid of collections and creditor call and they don’t money to pay off the debt. So, I would say maintaining a budget and then sticking to it is what matters. Here’s some Christmas budgeting tips that can help one remain within a fixed budget and not overspend during the festive season:
